Google unveils Project Ara Spiral 2 modular smartphone

Google has revealed the Project Ara Spiral 2 modular smartphone. It features a 720p display, 5 MP camera and 3G connectivity.

Google revealed its prototype Spiral 2 modular smartphone at the Project Ara Developers Conference in Mountain View this week. The handset will be launched in Puerto Rico in the second half of this year.

The Project Ara Spiral 2 features Marvell PXA1928 and Tegra K1 dual application processors. It has a 720 x 1280 pixels display, speakers and a 5 MP rear camera. The modular smartphone will have inbuilt light and proximity sensors. Connectivity options included in the prototype are a microUSB port, 3G modem with band 2 Antenna, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth support.

he Spiral 2 has a battery that offers 20% - 30% less capacity than an average smartphone, but Google plans to improve on that in the Spiral 3. According to reports, Google is already working on the Spiral 3, which will feature an improved camera, battery life, support 4G LTE connectivity and use an inductive system for contactless data connections between modules.

Currently, the Spiral 2 has 11 modules, but Google plans to increase the number to 30 by the end of the year. The new modules will add 4G connectivity as well as an improved camera.

Google is planning to launch the device in Puerto Rico which will work as a smaller test market, while it works with the FCC on the project before launching the project widely. The Internet giant plans to sell the Spiral 2 chassis and modules in Puerto Rico in partnership with local carriers OpenMobile and Claro.
